Grinch Day FUN!

During the holiday season we want to keep our students engaged in authentic literacy activities.
One way to do this is by having a Grinch Day!
*This instructional planning is an idea born from our hardworking, collaborative Kindergarten team.*

The day involves having a special guest read The Grinch Who Stole Christmas by Dr. Seuss.  I was so honored to be the guest chosen this year.  Because our campus is bilingual I worked with one of the teachers to translate sections of the story.  I was excited to be the first guest to read the book in both English AND Spanish!

After the reading with all students the classes divide into groups and will visit each teachers room that contains a different theme and engaging activity.  Stay turned for more posts on the activities used during the day.

My favorite part of the day was dressing as Miss Grinch.  (I wasn't planning on being called that, but the students created their own name.)  Dress up days instantly engage the students!  I put this look together and am going to use Mrs. Main's First Graders to help me share how you can look like the Grinch too!

First, let's talk about where to find certain items.  The green Grinch shirt was from Walmart, years ago but can still be found for about $8.  Any Grinch shirt should work, though!  I wanted to have some red too so I wore a long-sleeve red shirt underneath.  I also wore this because it was very cold outside that day.  I also wore red tights found at Target for $5 (but I couldn't find them this year).  I also wore sparkly Converse shoes that I found at Marshall's.  The green bow in my hair was from Hobby Lobby, where I went to get the supplies for my tutu skirt.

This skirt is made out of green, red sparkle and white sparkle tulle.  I used many different roles of it.  I put a couple pieces of red and white just to add to the Christmas colors.  All you need to make the skirt are the roles of tulle and a piece of elastic or ribbon to tie them on to.  You just need to cut lots of strips of tulle and tie them around the ribbon until it is full.  Then I wore a jean skirt underneath to help make it look even better.  If you would like to see how to make a great tulle skirt you should check out YouTube for tons of videos and different ways to make them.
